AOTY 2019

The year 2019 was different than previous ones have been. I still bought records, but not so much new releases. It was hard to come up with traditionally top ten list. There were few top notches and then something less interesting. Here are the ones that finally found their way to my list:

1. Insomnium – Heart Like a Grave

This was my personal number one pick by any criteria I can think of. I preferred this to the Winter’s Gate and over actually anything they’ve released. Winter’s Gate was more original, but HLAG went directly under my skin. That is what music is all about to me. Without any emotional attachment, music is not worth listening and consuming time. HLAG, with those beautiful guitars and melodies, and all those desperate lyrical themes made the listening to this album a purifying trip to deep and dark emotions that every once in a while should be let out or dealt with. I think that some changes in the line-up did only good to Insomnium. Winter’s Gate was, in a way, some sort of pinnacle in creativity. Like everything that could be done were done and things needed to change. I really like the sound they’ve put out. The guitars just sound so right compared to Omnium Gatherum. I saw both in live and in my book Insomnium win hands down.

2. Candlemass – Door to Doom

Returning of the legend and returning of the voice! The era with Rob Lowe is behind (some might say luckily), and reanimation of the genre-defining doom band is ours to enjoy. I love the vibe in this album. It is crushingly heavy and yet beautiful and one can sense the enjoyment of creating again the music together. Doom is quite challenging genre. You won’t do well by just just playing slow with distorted guitar tuning and singing about demons and stuff. You need to be able to create the right atmosphere and this is where doom bands either succeed or fail. Candlemass has an ability to paint such audible environments that listening becomes a trip to another place and another reality. The Door of Doom is an unbelievable album that would have won AOTY without Insomnium’s bull’s eye release. I was completely blown away by Johan Langquist’s live performance in Grasspop. This is a must-see should they perform in your area!

3. Darkthrone – Old Star

Who said anything about old farts? This duo put out an album that many younger black metal bands can only dream about doing in some day. A legend is a legend for a reason I guess. I am a big fan of Darkthrone’s new stuff. I simply love Arctic Thunder, but I wasn’t complaining when they announced that Old Star is a step back toward their older style. Old Star is raw-sounding, harsh even. Listening to this album makes your mind wander back in time to the time of warriors, great battles and deep, wild forests. That’s pretty much, what you’d expect from Norwegian black metal.

4. Death Angel – Humanicide

Another legend who show to younger generations how thrash is played and performed. One of the best shows in 2019. Album itself is pretty good as well. As a whole, Humanicide is more straightforward that the previous album, but some sort of imbalance between songs is present. Some songs are top notch, but then some felt like fillers. Humanicide is, however, catchy as hell and it has been playing quite a lot during the year. Death Angel also performed the best single gig I saw last year. I’m looking forward to see them again in club gig in February.

5. In Mourning – Garden of Storm

Apparently melodic death metal is still alive as this second MDM album in my top 5 list. As a late-year release, GoS didn’t get the playtime it deserves. Luckily, life goes on and I’m going to listening this many times in the future. GoS practically revived this band for me and I went to see their live performance. They actually were darn good and played one of the top gigs of last year. Keep those albums coming and I’ll keep buying them!

After this, things get a bit trickier, but here we go

6. King Diamond – Songs for the Dead Live

Yes, a live album found its way to my AOTY. This is long awaited live-DVD! album from King Diamond. Spotify version contains actually two gigs, one in Philadelphia and another from Grasspop. King's live performance is always top notch and this album is no exception. It contains many nice moments with songs that are beyond classics. King was again pretty good in 2019 Grasspop and those teasers from oncoming studio album were more than promising. I hope he’ll be able to put the studio record out during this year, so I would have something to write about.

7. Blood Incantation – Hidden History of the Human Race

Late 2019 release took me by a surprise. I'm not even sure where I picked them up, but I'm happy I did that. One could try to describe their music as death metal meets Pink Floyd or something alike. I have never heard stuff like this before and I found it oddly interesting. Their previous album turned out to be great too, so I’ll be following them in the future.

8. Abbath – Outstider

What’s this, the old frog still makes good music? Yes indeed, so maybe disbanding a band is sometimes good thing. Creativity needs changes and both Immortal and Abbath have benefit from them.

9. Gatecreeper - Deserted

Every AOTY-list needs some surprise and Gatecreeper is another if mine for 2019. Another late year release that didn’t get much playtime but there were something in their music that made me return to this album. Gatecreeper plays mid-tempo old school death metal that magically makes your head nod and your foot to tap from song to song. They’re performing in Helsinki next August and that just become a must see gig for me.

Best albums 2019 by Sami

Here are my choices for the best albums in 2019. Once again I have not listened as many albums as I would have hoped for. Besides, and as always, this list is also very very subjective.

Number 1. One, Uno, Un, Yksi, Üks, Etta, Eins

My best album of the year 2019, Candlemass - The Door to Doom

Candlemass - The Door to Doom

The comeback of a century! Candlemass will crush you and you'll be asking for more.

The Conference finalists

Bloodred Hourglass - Godsend

Best from Finland at the moment!

Cult of Luna - A Dawn to Fear

Another heavyweight album, emphasis on the word "weight".

In Mourning - Garden of Storms

Seems that the Swedes almost stole the whole show, luckily BRHG kept our flag high. The most versatile act from the top five. Also did one of the best gigs of the Year in Nosturi in December.

The Division finalists

AqME - Requiem

Don't let the French fool you, this album is pure gold.

The Blanko - Stimulation Paradise

Surprised me with all the earworms and good vibes. Just couldn't stop listening. The most played album of mine of this year.

Borknagar - True North

Norwegian darkness suits the Finns as well, we just don't have the mountains, which is sad as well.

Insomnium - Heart Like a Grave

A rock-solid performer, no surprises here with Insomnium being in top 10.

Qualifying round

November's Doom - Nephilim Grove

Sullen and depressive, the best moment of the day!

The Black Keys - Let's Rock

You just keep listening to the next song and next, just one more, this is the last one...

Swallow the Sun - When a Shadow Is Forced into the Light

The music you can listen to all (day) night long.

A Pale Horse Named Death - When the World Becomes Undone

I warmly welcome the boys of Pale Horse back but the album should have been squeezed to 50 minutes.

Overkill - The Wings of War

Pit music.

Not qualified because of the referee's laziness (too few listenings, not in particular order)

Cattle Decapitation - Death Atlas
Pelican - Nighttime Stories
Misery Index - Rituals of Power
Black Mountain - Destroyer
Texas Hippie Coalition - High in the Saddle
Baroness - Gold & Grey

Best Albums 2018

by Sami

I finally managed to increase the number of listened tracks per year after several years of downhill on this sector. In contrast, the number of records I bought in 2018 was lower than ever before. Let's see how this affects the listening of the records in the future when these chosen ones might not be as readily available as they are now. I guess that this is the future though and of course there are obvious benefits with the streamed albums. When choosing the best albums of the year, I noticed that there are clearly two categories that are really hard to compare to each other. Therefore I chose to select just the best album from the whole bunch of them and then evaluate the rest within their own genre.

The Best of All

Hamferð - Támsins Likam

Roaring seas, howling winds, serene coves, rocky mountains, seabirds, fresh air, violent storms, rough men, fighting against the elements, surviving. If this is how the Faroe Islands are like, Hamferd describes it perfectly in their music. The album is so full of feeling, and only six songs, you can only listen this one once a week (with headphones) or you will explode. It fills you, it makes you feel empty and longing, it makes you feel small, it makes you bigger than you were before. Not Icelanders this year, but Atlantic Islands rule again!

Metal 1 - 5 (not in particular order)

Bloodbath - The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn

Give me a speaker big enough and a Bloodbath album, and I shall move the world.

Amorphis - Queen of Time

Amorphis has combined styles from their different eras and has done it well.

Soulfly - Ritual

Max hasn't been anywhere far away, but now Max is back! You can either go out and pick a fight in your local mall (if you live in Eastern Helsinki) or you can listen this album, the result is the same, you'll feel victorious (and beaten).

Primordial - Exile Amongst the Ruins

Beautifully massive music. Pretty much all the songs begin with at least a minute long intro where the atmosphere is created and the rest then continues from these ruins.

The Crown - Cobra Speed Venom

A true wave of metal!

Metal 6 -> (not in particular order)

Barren Earth — A Complex of Cages

Tribulation — Down Below

High on Fire — Electric Messiah

The Best of Stoner/Rock/Psychedelic

Clutch - Book of Bad Decisions

Stoner that makes you move.

Stoner/Rock/Psychedelic 2 - 5 (not in particular order)

Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog

The album speaks for itself.

Monster Magnet - Mindfucker

A real mindfucker, psychedelic rock, stoner and everything else that Monster Magnet is.

Orange Goblin - The Wolf Bites Back

After the first song, it is just pure bulldozing.

Black Label Society - Grimmest Hits

A hammock, six pack of beer and BLS album, what else?

Stoner/Rock/Psychedelic 6 -> (not in particular order)

Brant Bjork — Mankind Woman

Corrosion of Conformity — No Cross No Crown

Uncle Acid And the Deadbeats — Wasteland

The Best Gigs

Clutch, Tuska Festival
Body Count feat IceT, Tuska Festival
Uncle Acid And the Deadbeats, Tavastia

Best of 2018

I predicted that 2018 would be above average what comes to new releases based on speculations or solid knowledge from the record companies. Some must buy albums were to be expected. I can already reveal that some of those really delivered. Then there were some surprises that I either did not expect or I was completely unaware that they were about to released. Looking back now, I have to say that 2018 were indeed great year. My top ten album charts were almost entirely composed of albums released this year. Let’s see what was left on hand this time!

Corrosion of Conformity - No Cross, No Crown

Corrosion of Conformity has become one of those bands that whatever they put out I buy. As expected, “No Cross, No Crowns” was a damn good album. NCNC was released during the first quarter of the year and it collected formidable amount of listening, way above anything else and I’m not even bored with it. Although I liked their previous albums, it is so good to have Pepper back. I adore his vocal performance, absolutely one of my all-time favorite singers. He isn’t a bad guitarist either. NCNC kind of continues where this band left things after In the Arms of God. “Wolf Named Crow”, “E.L.M” and “No Cross, No Crown” are amongst those pearls. Instrumentals songs were doomed as fillers by some reviews, but I think they have a certain function: they give a short break to breathe in and they are important contributors to the overall sound and especially to the feeling of this album. Maybe this is not the best album, but the dearest of them all. 1700+ plays verify that.

Voivod - The Wake
The one that was the biggest surprise of 2018 was Voivod’s new release “The Wake”. This could be the best album and without NCNC, my pick for number one. But hey, Second position isn’t that bad. “The Wake” is by far the most interesting album released in a long time and easily one of the best in Voivod’s discography (which, to be honest, contains many shitty albums as well). I’m one of those fans that love The Outer Limits and was thrilled then Post Society EP came out. This also sets the stage to my hype toward “The Wake”. I completely understand that if progressive elements are not your cup of tea, The Wake might be too obscure and not heavy enough. It could be progressive thrash or whatever. I’m so tired to that genre jerking. Decide yourself what you want to call it. The Wake is one of those albums that should be listened in a linear order following the story. I really think that the story plays an important part here. It brings all those progressive elements into life and gives them the meaning. Another thing that is worth mentioning is Chewy’s brilliant guitar playing. That was even more evident during Voivod’s live performance last summer. Besides being technically flawless, his way of playing has a soul rarely seen. Go figure what that means as we are talking about metal guitar playing. That was just my thoughts while watching the gig. I don’t know maybe I should have put this as number one.

The Crown - Cobra Speed Venom
Besides the Corrosion of Conformity, The Crown is one of those bands whose new albums go directly to my waiting list and I buy the album the very day it is released. Cobra Speed Venom is absolutely fantastic metal album. It wins also the coolest album art prize. That skeleton wave is simply brilliant making me regret that I went and sold my vinyl player. CSV art would be awesome in vinyl size. Some call The Crown a thrash band, some death metal, I really don’t care. These guys are past forty and they are still able can compose this kind of music. The very existence of the CSV proves that magical metal is not born only when you are young and abusing narcotics. It is born from the attitude and devotion to metal music. I saw these guys playing lase summer and their live performance was second to none. Many younger performers should attend and learn. I remember that I was so thrilled then Johan Lindstrand’s return to the Crown was announced couple of years ago. Their first reunion album “Death Is Not Dead” was pretty good, but they really nailed things with CSV.

Clutch - Book of Bad Decisions
It seems that Clutch is unable to release a bad album. I saw them performing some of the songs from this album in the summer before it was released this and those songs were flawless. “In walks Barbarella” could be the best song of the year. If not, it is weaponized funk at its best. Clutch songs have that magic groove that makes their live performances so enjoyable. In addition, their lyrics are fun. I’m looking forward to see them again.

Immortal - Northern Chaos Gods
Immortal was supposed to be dead and buried deep, but somehow Demonaz found energy to reanimate the band. I like his vision of “The Post-Abbath-Immortal”. Northern Chaos Gods is a return toward their older sound, which is a good thing. More importantly, NCG again captures that mystical atmosphere that I loved so much in “In the Heart of winter” -album. Just listen to the “Mighty Ravendark” song and you’ll understand what I mean. For me that is the thing in black metal and Immortal does that well.

Amorphis - Queen of Time
Amorphis might have reached their bombastic upper limit with Queen of Time -album. For the first time, they have a symphony orchestra and choirs impeded. The end result is big and glorious. QoT contains lots of hits and always so wonderful Anneke Giersbergen as guest appearance in Amongst Stars. Production is flawless, Jens Borgen did good job. So everything should be OK, but I still found a bit difficult to develop a relationship with this album. I honestly liked Under the Red Cloud more, maybe because it is not that big and glorious. Amorphis performed their first Old Ice Hall -gig utilizing the Black Box concept. I think that venue did justice to hhe music of QoF. It is really made for a big context and as such it outperforms Nightwish.

Phage's picks for 2017

New Year’s Eve is approaching and it is time of traditional the Albums of the Year list. Every time when I try to think in advance what albums might be in list, I get some but luckily there are always some surprises. This year is a little bit different, mostly because I wasn’t that active discovering new stuff and partly because I’m getting old and stuck to the music I already know. That is bit sad and I’ll try to generate more interesting list for the next year. Anyway, here’s what I really dug in 2018.

1.    Mastodon – Emperor of the Sun

This was by far my most listened album in this year. Everything I like in this band is present: catchy and complicated metal with progressive twist. Lyrics are meaningful, riffs makes my head nod and some of the guitar solos touch my heart deep. Mastodon album art has been flawless throughout their discography and this made no exception. The final seal for victory came from their amazing live performance in Tuska Open Air festival.

2.       The Haunted – Strength in Numbers

The second position was particularly difficult. I decided finally to go with The Haunted. Many people think that Peter Dolvig was better and more interesting vocalist. They might be right, but that Aro is back in vocals, the edge is back in The Haunted’s music. This is your pissed off head banging metal that is always needed.

3.       Foo Fighters – Concrete and Steel

Purely based on the play counts and I also liked this new album and they were so great live performers.

4.       Immolation – Atonement

Are these guys even able to compose bad album? This was at first somewhat flat without any obvious hit songs (if such term can be used in this occasion). More careful listening however revealed the potential. This will be in my playlist many times in the future.

5.       Annihilator – For the Demented

I can’t help myself, I’m a sucker what comes to this band and the Jeff’s guitar work. Absolutely the most hilarious ballad lyrics of all time is in song Pieces of You.

6.       Enslaved – E

Another band whose album I buy blindly because I never heard a bad song. They continued toward the progressive path they’ve taken from the Ruun and I can’t complain. Brilliant album, which takes some listening to get into it. Also the most impressive opening I’ve heard in a long time

7.       Archspire – Relentless Mutation

This is brilliant technical death metal. Their previous album became my favorite and I had huge expectations toward this record. It easily redeemed them all! These guys can invent riffs you wouldn’t believe.

8.       Body Count – Bloodlust

Personally I’m not a huge rap or rap core fan, but this album was so much fun when it came out that I had to include it to my list. “I gotta get paid the ski mask way”…

9.       Cannibal Corpse – Red Before Black

They can put that difficult-to-define groove in their music that only a few death metal bands are able to accomplish. Not perhaps as good as the Skeletal Domain, but I enjoyed this quite a lot.

10.   Devin Townsend Project – The Transcendence

The best DTP album in a long time. The guitar solo Devin played in The Failure at Circus live gig was one of the top gig moments of the year 2017.

The best EP of 2017

 Mastodon - Dark Cold Place

This was the year of Mastodon. This EP simply seals the fact.
